My Bookish Life, vol. 4 pt. 2

Hello, March! We have blown into March like a lion in these parts of Michigan. It has been quite blustery and cold out, and while I don’t mind the cold, I like it much better from the confines of my own home!

February brought the middle of the semester and a lot of other new things for me. I’ve become more active and present in the Asian American community here on campus, and I’m really enjoying meeting all of the new people. I feel that I’ve made a lot of new friends, and I really look forward to what March has in store for me! If you saw my blog post earlier this week, I was able to complete 10 books in February! You can read the full monthly wrap-up here.

I’ve already failed my resolution of blogging three times a week, but there’s always this month to improve on it! I’m trying really hard to get some good content on here, so keep an eye out for some blog tours in the future!!

Currently Listening: Would you believe me if I said I was still obsessed with K-pop? Okay well, you should because I am. Monsta X had a comeback in February along with Pentagon! I highly recommend you listen to “Dear Friend” because it is warm and a hug in song form. I also made a playlist of instrumental K-pop because I like to listen to it when I’m anxious and can’t fall asleep

Currently Watching: My friends and I decided to re-watch Avatar the Last Airbender because we needed to revisit this part of our childhood. We’re currently on the final season, and honestly I love Appa so much. My friend Abby and I haven’t seen the whole series beginning to end, so we’re all using our Amazon accounts to watch it. I can’t wait to see what happens! I can pretty much recite the intro from memory now too.

Currently Reading: Right now I’m listening to Pachinko by Min Jin Lee. I also am digging into The Fever King by Victoria Lee, which debuted March 1st! Be sure to keep an eye out for that review soon. I’m hoping to keep up this awesome reading streak I have going, so we’ll see!

I hope you’re having a great start to the month!!

Happy reading,
Sophie 🙂

Wow, can you believe it’s already 2019? And this is the FOURTH volume of my small updates. I can’t believe the time has flown by so fast. It feels just like yesterday that I had started this blog with my fellow book lover Maiya. I was but a wee sophomore in high school. Flashforward, and I am not writing from my fourth semester in college.

I want to apologize for the lack of posting. I always say that I will be more active every year, and it honestly just slips by the wayside as I get busier. It’s harder when I have so much on my plate and I’m out of a regular habit of writing. I’m going to try in earnest this year to write more on here. I want to document more moments of my life in writing, and this is going to be my way in!

2018 Review

I read 79 books last year! My goal was to read 100, but once I started the fall semester I really hit the ground running. It didn’t bode well for my reading. That being said, I did get quite a lot in there! I’m doing a mini series of books I loved featuring author interviews, and you can see the first post here.

I also started my second fall semester of college! I was really excited to go back — I missed my best friends so much! It was a hard semester for me. I joined three groups on campus, and am finally facing a lot of personal questions I didn’t know I had. I feel that I’m getting know myself better through this entire process though. Shout out to my two best friends, Abby and Haley, (and my family!) for letting me ugly cry so much in front of them!

Here are some of my absolute favorite memories of the fall:

2019 Resolutions

I’m not much one for sticking to resolutions. I’m quite terrible at it to be honest, but this year I want to set just a few to see it they’ll stick better.

  1. Blog three times a week
  2. Read 80 books
  3. Complete a third year of bullet journaling
  4. Complete a spring and fall semester with at least a 3.5 GPA

They may be small, but I’m ready to focus all my energy into them.

What are some of your resolutions? Tell me in the comments below!

Current Obsessions

Currently Listening: I’m still so in love with K-Pop, and I’ve expanded who I listen to! I also recently started listening to C-Pop, mostly Mandopop. There are so many great artists out there, and I’m so impressed by their talent.

Here’s a playlist of my current K-Pop faves that no one asked for:

Do you listen to K- or C-Pop? What groups do you follow? Any suggestions?

Currently reading: I’m reading so many books right now it’s not even funny.

Currently Watching:

  • The Memories of Alhambra, it’s a kdrama currently being updated on Netflix, and I’m obsessed! I can’t wait to see what happens
  • Fresh Off the Boat, I loved Constance Wu so much in Crazy Rich Asians that I decided to watch her tv show!

I hope you liked this update! I don’t know how often I will do a life update, but maybe if I stick to blogging it’ll be once a week. I can’t wait to see what 2019 holds for us, and thank you for sticking it out with me over the years.

Happy reading,

Sophie 🙂

My Bookish Life, pt. 1, vol. 4: New Year’s Resolutions & 2019 Updates

Every time I type that title, I’m surprised when I get to vol. 3. I can’t believe I’ve been blogging for a little longer than that. (I started spring of my sophomore year of high school.) I feel like I’ve grown so much in that time both as a writer and as a person.

ANYWAY! I went home for the weekend!! I’m glad to be here after a really long week with my team. It’s been very stressful as we gear up for the last half of school. Every weekend of April I’ll have a race with the team and I have to stay a week after exams for a race. It’s going to be crazier than it is now, so I’m here resting up before.

As of late, I haven’t had a phone due to mine taking a dunk in the water over break. I won’t be able to access Instagram as easily or post as frequently until I get a new one. Thanks for sticking around! My friend and I have a lot of taking pics for the account and hopefully I’ll be back soon!!

I haven’t had much luck with reading this week. Getting back so late on Sunday meant I hit the ground running on Monday and I haven’t had a day’s rest since. I’m exhausted. I’m looking for something to dig into soon, and hopefully I’ll have some fun, exciting things I can share with you all coming up!

My latest obsession is BTS. I love love love listening to their music, watching the music videos, and watching different YouTube videos of anything relating to them. I don’t understand a lick of what they’re singing except the English, but it’s beautiful music and they’re a group that I’m dying to hear more from this coming year. Have you listened to them before? Let me know in the comments.

I hope you’ve had a good week! What are you reading this weekend? Comment below!

Happy reading,

Sophie 🙂

Monthly Update: An August to Remember (haha sure)

Hello there! I’m here to just talk a little about myself and give everyone a bit of an update as to new changes in the blog and what I’m hoping to do these coming months. And to talk a little bit about my summer and all of that good stuff.

As you have noticed my posting frequency declined a lot for a while there. I had tried several times to come back, but unfortunately it was just too much to blog and work and get school work done. However, now that it’s summer, I’ve had a little bit more time to sit and review all of the books I’ve read (err, 61 in the year thus far as of the writing of this post), but I’m still plodding forward to catch up to what I’m currently reading. I’ve found that I’m a lot faster when I listen to audiobooks as well as read physical copies.

As of today, I begin classes at Michigan State, which I’m extremely excited about! I am coming in as a second semester freshman due to the amount of credits I am awarded through Advance Placement tests. It’s something I’ve been looking forward to for a long time, and I can’t believe I’m here!

This past summer was a whirlwind. At the very beginning of June I was in New York for BookCon. (It’s like ComicCon for books, pretty much a book lover’s dream.) While there I had the amazing opportunity to interview several fabulous authors including Sarah Dessen, Stephanie Perkins, Erin Chack, Melissa de la Cruz, and Renee Ahdieh. My interview with Marie Lu was even featured in Justine Magazine‘s August/September issue! You can find all of my writing (excluding the interviews with Marie Lu and Caden from @athousandbookstoread) here on Justine‘s website. However, most of my summer was eaten up by working two jobs and adding a third one in there with Justine. Needless to say I didn’t get much sleep and I worked every single day of the summer minus my mini vacation to New York. (News flash — college is hella expensive!! 😛 )

This past month I’ve read (and re-read) several books. Some notable ones that you’re going to want to watch out for are Invictus by Ryan Graudin, Forest of a Thousand Lanterns by Julie C. Dao, and Devils & Thieves by Jennifer Rush. Invictus is due to be out on September 26, and the last two are due out in October (10th and 3rd respectively) All of these were fabulous, and I couldn’t put them down. A few books that I recently re-read were Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell and Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi. Fangirl was an obvious go to for me this time of the year especially with the parallels in our situations! I don’t think there are enough books about being a college freshman, but I hope there are more coming!

Since I’m starting to get into college life, I can’t promise that I will post regularly. It’s a lot to balance, and I want to make new friends and get into college life! That being said, I will do my best to keep you in the loop with all the kinds of changes headed your way. I will probably take a break around the first part of December due to finals, but that feels like years away from today. Thank you all for your loyalty to the blog, or your new-found following! I’m so glad you’re all here with me on this journey!

Happy reading,

Sophie 🙂

Hello, welcome to the weekend! I’m so happy it’s Saturday. Unfortunately that means it’s my last full day of committee. I’m coming to you from the Windy City at the Model UN conference which is held by University of Chicago. This is my last overnight conference, and it’s a bit bittersweet.

This week I only went to school for three days and then we left for Chicago early Thursday morning. One of my favorite parts of the trip is riding the train. I’ve only ridden the train a few times but there is something about it that I love. It’s kind of like flying but you get to get up and walk around the whole time. Opening ceremonies was Thursday night so we got to spend the rest of the day wandering Chicago. Of course I went to a bookstore (57th Street Books – my favorite one located in Hyde Park). Friday was the first full day of committees, but they didn’t start until 1. Our school’s delegation is representing the Republic of Korea and we got to meet the Deputy Consulate of Korea Friday morning. It was super cool to meet a real diplomat. I have written two pieces already and am going for an award. I’m ready for this guys, I really want it.

Today I’m hoping to get more articles out again. It’s gonna be a long day full of more committee. I have to find more things to write about but since it’s the third day we’re really getting into the thick of debate. I can’t believe I’ll be going home tomorrow. These things always feel both long and short. It’s weird, but I like it.

This week I’ve gotta get back on track with my classes. I missed two school days but really all I missed in class was statistics. I wish I didn’t miss so much school but it’s totally worth it. I have a test on Monday already but I think I’m prepared. I’ll probably panic a bit more Sunday. We’ll get there when we get there. Otherwise it’s just a normal week for me.

Happy reading,

Sophie 🙂

General Update: My Bookish Life no.2 vol. 2

Hello, how are you all doing today? I’ve had a quiet one today and a bit of a busy week last week.

I had a lot of catch up work to do after missing a day for my Model UN conference. It was nice to have a day off due to the ice, though. I was glad to be back in my classes and tried my best to get everything back to normal since next week is finals! I had orchestra for the first time this year, and it was great to be back. We got a new piece – the Blue Danube Waltz and if you’re familiar with the piece you know how long and taxing it is. The mapping of the piece (how to read through the piece) took 20 minutes in and of itself. We cut a lot of stuff out to lessen the time it takes to play, too, and I can’t wait to work on it further. A lot of my teachers were out this week so I had a lot of subs which was kind of weird.

Today I was busy but not busy. I did a lot of my homework and studied for my exams. I worked a bit and then came home and read (a lot). I’ reading Passenger by Alexandra Bracken and The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. I love them both for different reasons, but one commonality is how much I love the character development.

I wish I could have been at a Women’s March today. It was so inspiring to see all of the signs of protest when scrolling through my Facebook and Instagram feeds. Thank you to all who participated and gave us a voice.

Well, in other news, this week is my last finals week. It was a bit of a mess due to so many conflicts but thankfully I’ve worked it all out. I’m missing Friday to go to a scholarship competition and I’m carpooling with my two favorite people (you know who you are *cough* Ana *cough*). It’s gonna be a great weekend. I also am gonna stay the night with my friend I haven’t seen since Christmas and I’m so excited to hang out with her again!

Have a wonderful week, guys!

Happy reading,

Sophie 🙂

Hi guys!!!!!! It’s me, Sophie, your favorite book blogger ever 😉 Do you know how much I missed you guys and writing regularly? Life has been so crazy this past November so I had to take a break – I couldn’t devote the time I needed to the blog. But don’t worry, as I said, it was temporary! So maybe you’re wondering what I have been up to this past month. If you don’t really care then I’m going to tell you anyway!

This past month

I finished applying to college!! I sent in five applications and I haven’t heard back from any of them yet. Don’t worry though, that doesn’t mean I’m not going to college. I applied through Regular and Early Decision programs which just means that I’ll get my answers back later on. I should be getting 2 soon this month, and I’m so excited and nervous! My fingers are crossed and my breath is held, but in the mean time that means I’ve had more time for me (and reading of course).

I’ve become better friends with people I’ve known and been friends with for a while, but lately we’ve gotten closer. A lot of my friends graduated last year, so I felt a little out of place this year. Thankfully, I have found my people. I also recently started hanging out more with kids in a neighboring town. They’re really great and I’m glad to have found them. This year has been turning out well for me in the friend department

Remember that guy I went to Homecoming with? It didn’t work out between us, but, you know, that’s okay. I have since made peace with it all, and I’m feeling really positive about the entire experience. He just wasn’t that into me, and I can respect that.

School has been pretty busy. I go to class, try to stay awake in them, and do homework. There are two classes with a lot of work, but overall I’m really enjoying them all. My Fem Lit class is fabulous. I’m working on a final project that will consist of multimedia components, and I’m stoked to see it come together.

I wrote and published two articles for Justine Magazine. They’re about books of course 🙂 If you want to read them click here and here. They’re recs based on Disney Princesses and 9 underhyped books respectively. I hope you enjoy them!

Today is just okay. I’m working and there’s the annual holiday parade, but I’ll miss it because of work. It’s my oldest sister’s birthday and I’m excited to hang out with her. I’ll be Skyping (and meeting) my friend and fellow blogger Beth over at The Books Are Everywhere for the first time! I’m so excited to finally meet the girl I’ve become such good friends with. She is so supportive and sweet, go send her blog some love. Otherwise I’m not up to much.

This coming week

Tests on Monday and my  first pep band games. It’ll be a busy one along with a holiday dance on Saturday to boot. I asked a guy and he said yes 🙂 More to come with that.

How are you guys doing? Catch me up!

Happy reading!

Sophie 🙂

General Update: My Bookish Life pt. 29

Hi, there! As you may have noticed, I took a bit of a hiatus this week. This week was a hard one for me, and blogging took a backseat to schoolwork, band, and my life in general. Don’t worry though! I will be back again this month, maybe not as often as I’d like, but I’m going to do my best to re-calibrate some sort of balance into my life – one that includes blogging and reading once again!

This week

I had my last orchestra rehearsal on Tuesday for a while. Although my orchestra is still meeting I will not be able to go all of October due to marching band rehearsal conflicts on Tuesday and we have games every week of October. It’s going to be a fun month though!

I went to the orchestra last night. It was fabulous. I love going to the orchestra, and I was so excited to go. It was a Heroes and Villains theme. Every year my school’s orchestra puts on a Halloween concert, and I have yet to be able to go, but hopefully I can this year.

I am so close to finishing The Unexpected Everything and it’s pretty… okay. I’m still trying to work out my full feelings of the book so hopefully I will have a review out to you guys soon (along with the September Book Junkies chat!).

It’s rainy and gross out today. I have to work a little bit, but after that I’m going over to a friend’s house and we’re just going to watch movies and make food. It’ll be a nice chill day for me after such a rough week.

This coming week

It’s Homecoming week! For those of you who don’t really know what Homecoming is, it’s a celebration that takes place all week that focuses on your school. Alumnae of the school come back on Friday for a football game to see how far the school has come along and stuff. There’s a dance on Saturday, and it’s really fun because everyone gets fancy. I love getting fancy, and the dance is okay. I don’t dance like most people do – I kind of flail and stuff when I dance. It’s much more fun that way. I promise I’ll have some pictures up when I get a chance.

So this was meant to be posted yesterday but I didn’t finish until today so… yay!

Have a great week, happy reading!

Sophie 🙂
